Jesus Piece tee collaboration with Brooklyn Circus

Graphic designer and Illustrator Luis Ornelas is known for his timeless designs and complex craftsmanship. The Dallas, Texas native has collaborated with some of the coolest brands and hottest names in music. Luis discusses his start, his love for collaborations, and his favorite hip-hop artists.

How did you get your start in graphic design?

I have always enjoyed creating, but I was really into painting and drawing before graphic design. After school, I got an internship at a letterpress shop, where I learned a lot about design and production. Design is all around us, and we all see it from a different perspective. Graphic design is collaborating with other people and bringing their ideas to life. I enjoy learning new perspectives and pushing others to create something unique.

How would you describe your design style?

Ever-changing. My style continues to change as I collaborate with other creatives and learn new techniques.

Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?

I am always looking for inspiration. I am constantly studying other designers to learn how they solve problems, simplify a complex idea (logos and branding), and tell a story using illustrations or photography. From seeing other creators to my surroundings, a big part comes from understanding how designers and artists before me worked.

You did an amazing collaboration with modern menswear brand (and one of our favorites!), The Brooklyn Circus. How was that experience?

Thank you, working with The Brooklyn Circus has always been a dream of mine. They have a rich background with history and pushing boundaries. The experience was amazing. It forced me out of my comfort zone, and I learned a lot from it.

You have done projects with Hip-Hop artists such as Joey Bada$$ and Lil Uzi Vert; what music do you listen to while creating?

I am a big southern hip-hop fan; I'm a big Outkast, Big Krit, and Tobe Nguyen fan, to name a few. I have a list of artists I would like to work with in the future if an opportunity comes up.

While some people enjoy graphic design, some believe it is too difficult to learn. What did it take to hone your skills, and how much time do you spend on your designs on average?

That's a tough question. I feel like I have dived deep into graphic design as a lifestyle now. I am constantly looking at my work, trying to rework it or find ways to improve. As far as time spent, many factors play a role in that. It depends on how complex the design can be, from custom lettering to illustrations. A small project can last 2-3 days. A complex one can take a month to two. I like to treat every project as a collaboration, so there is always a lot of back-and-forth dialogue.

What's next for Luis?

I want to get more into creating with my hands. I want to step away from a computer and learn new mediums and techniques. I would like to get more into painting, drawing, and printmaking. Even though most of my design work is done by hand, having pieces you must see in person to appreciate and interact with would be my end goal.

What motto or quote do you use to help guide your life?

More than any quote or motto, I use being a son of immigrants to guide my life. Experiencing my parents' work ethic and sacrifices push me to seek opportunities.
